A Few Helpful Answers

Straightforward guidance on starting therapy and your options.

What happens when I get in touch?
When you contact Awena Therapi, we’ll start with a brief conversation (or message exchange) to understand what you’re looking for and whether we’re a good fit. We can cover availability, session format, and what support you’re hoping for. The first session is usually about getting a clear picture of what’s going on and agreeing the best next step.
Is psychotherapy confidential?
Yes. What you share is treated as confidential and handled in line with professional standards. Confidentiality has limits in situations such as serious risk of harm, safeguarding concerns, or where there is a legal requirement to share information. If this ever became relevant, it would be handled carefully and proportionately.
Do I have to do art therapy, or be “good at art”?
No. Sessions can be fully talk-based, it can also include a creative approach aligned with art psychotherapy. There is no expectation to be “good at art”, and it isn’t an art lesson.
What is art therapy?
Art therapy (also called art psychotherapy) is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative processes alongside conversation to help people explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The focus is on expression and meaning-making, not the final image. For some people it can feel easier than relying on words alone.
What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy often used for trauma and PTSD. It supports the processing of distressing memories so they feel less intense over time. NICE includes EMDR as a treatment option for PTSD in specific circumstances.
